A Victims' Rights & Civil Rights Law Firm that Advocates for Survivors
I’m proud to announce the launch of ALM Law, a victims’ rights and civil rights law firm that specializes in providing legal services to children involved in and harmed by child welfare systems, survivors of intimate partner violence, and survivors of sexual abuse and exploitation.
The creation of ALM Law has been a long time in the making, and my dream is to grow it into a boutique firm. I want to thank my friends and family for encouraging me throughout this process, all the lawyers and legal entrepreneurs who offered advice, my Fordham Law community, and the nonprofit lawyers and leaders who shared information with me about service gaps. I could not have done this without you. And, of course, I owe many thanks to the mentors and supervisors, especially those at Lawyers for Children and A Better Childhood, who trained me and helped me to grow into the lawyer, entrepreneur, and leader I am today.
At ALM Law, I will be representing children in abuse and neglect proceedings as well as delinquency proceedings through a contract with Colorado’s Office of the Child’s Representative. I will also represent children in foster care who have been harmed while living in foster homes, group homes, residential facilities, detention centers, and psychiatric residential treatment facilities—something that happens much too frequently. Unfortunately, many of these stories remain hidden, in part because children in our child welfare systems are disconnected from their communities and in part because many private organizations that are sued quietly settle their cases. To be clear, I am not afraid to go to trial on these cases if that is what a client wants.
I have years of experience advocating for children in hearing and trials, investigating broken child welfare systems, and filing civil rights lawsuits on behalf of children. On a personal note, my grandmother grew up in what was then termed an “orphanage” in Chicago, and, therefore, a dysfunctional child welfare system has touched my family.
I will also represent survivors of intimate partner violence and sexual abuse and exploitation. I have worked on these issues for over a decade and look forward to continuing to fight to put an end to these abuses. An abusive relationship impacted my own life, so I understand all too well how abuse can affect a person. My legal services will range from filing civil suits against abusers and those who aid abusers to obtaining orders of protection for clients to helping victims gain custody of their children.
My firm is prepared to handle every stage of our clients’ cases. That includes conducting investigations, negotiating settlements, litigating cases in court, and appealing problematic decisions. And every case will be approached from a trauma-informed, survivor-centric perspective.
ALM Law is based in Colorado and will provide legal services throughout the state. I’m also licensed in New York and Washington, D.C.—so I hope my east coast friends and colleagues will keep me in mind if any cases come up involving the issues my firm handles.
I’m very excited to watch ALM Law grow over not only this next year but hopefully many years to come. I’ve learned that it takes a community to build a successful business, so if anyone has questions, thoughts, or advice, I’d love to hear from you! I’m so honored to be able to do this work, and I hope I can be an inspiration for other lawyers who are interested in making a career out of doing impactful legal work.
Thank you,
Allison
